Primary Treatment Processes
At K-PURE Waterworks, we begin our wastewater treatment process with the essential first step known as primary treatment. This stage is critical for removing the large materials that could potentially damage equipment or hinder subsequent treatment phases.
Screening
Screening is the first defense in our wastewater treatment arsenal. Here, we eliminate all large objects, such as sticks, rags, and plastics, that have found their way into the wastewater stream.
Grit Removal
Following screening, grit removal takes place. This process involves the extraction of sand, eggshells, and other gritty substances to prevent abrasive damage to our equipment and ensure smoother operation in later stages.
Primary Sedimentation
In the primary sedimentation stage, we allow wastewater to sit in large basins. During this period, gravity pulls down heavier solids to the bottom, producing sludge, while lighter materials float to the top, forming scum. These are then removed and directed towards further treatment or disposal.
Secondary Treatment Processes
Secondary treatment is where the biological removal of dissolved organic matter takes place. Our approach involves several proven processes to ensure efficient breakdown of these materials.
Activated Sludge Process
Using the activated sludge process, we aerate the wastewater to encourage growth and activity of bacteria and other microorganisms, which consume the organic pollutants.
Trickling Filter
A trickling filter allows wastewater to trickle over a bed of stones or specially designed media, covered with bacteria and other microorganisms, to break down the organic matter in the wastewater.
Rotating Biological Contactor
This method involves rotating discs partially submerged in wastewater. The discs are coated with microorganisms that absorb and break down organic pollutants as they rotate.
Tertiary Treatment Processes
Tertiary treatment, or advanced treatment, further purifies wastewater beyond secondary treatment, often employing a variety of processes tailored to remove specific contaminants.
Filtration
Filtration methods vary but are all designed to remove remaining solids and certain types of dissolved matter from the water.
Disinfection
Disinfection usually involves chlorine or ultraviolet light to kill any remaining pathogens before the water is released back into the environment.
Nutrient Removal
Nutrient removal is crucial for preventing eutrophication in receiving water bodies. Our processes target the reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus levels.
Advanced Treatment Processes
For water requiring even higher purity levels, advanced treatment processes come into play. These are often necessary for water to be reused for more stringent applications.
Membrane Bioreactors

UV Disinfection

Sludge Treatment and Disposal
Sludge generated from wastewater treatment processes requires careful handling, treatment, and disposal to minimize environmental impact.
Thickening
Thickening reduces the water content of sludge, making it easier and more cost-effective to process further or dispose of.
Dewatering
Further reducing the moisture content of sludge, dewatering transforms sludge into a solid state, which simplifies disposal.
Digestion
During digestion, microorganisms break down organic matter in sludge, reducing its volume and converting it into stable materials and biogas, which can be used to generate energy.
